Travel Sketches & Journal: Canary Islands 2026

Cruise Terminal Santa Cruz de Tenerife

My girlfriend and me spent seven days aboard the cruise ship Mein Schiff Relax, exploring the Canary Islands with a stop in Madeira along the way. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather for almost the entire trip, which allowed us to explore each island at a relaxed pace. We enjoyed coffee in Arrecife on Lanzarote, soaked up the sunshine in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, took long walks on La Palma, and finished our journey by exploring the tropical Monte Palace Madeira garden on Madeira.

Beyond all the amenities and activities a large cruise ship has to offer, one thing stood out above all: we had plenty of time. Despite the many excursions and the occasional drink at the bar, I usually found time in the evenings to reflect on the day through drawing.

Since I rarely go sketching in groups and do not particularly enjoy being watched while I draw, I usually work from my own reference photos. This allows me to take in far more impressions throughout the day and, in the end, create a much larger body of work.

On the occasions when I do bring along a sketchbook or my iPad, I usually choose a seat with my back against a wall so I can keep an eye on everything around me. It is my favorite way to avoid curious or fascinated people looking over my shoulder while I am drawing.

In particular, Arrecife (Lanzarote) left a lasting impression on me. We strolled through the picturesque fishing village and, under perfect weather conditions, enjoyed a beautiful view of the lagoon “El Charco de San Ginés”.

A palm-lined promenade runs all the way around the lagoon, surrounded by many cafés, restaurants, and bars.

It is the perfect place for a small snack or a coffee late in the morning.

In contrast to the smaller island of Lanzarote, Gran Canaria was a paradise for those who enjoy being surrounded by a lively atmosphere. The long beachfront promenade was filled with people.

The range of sports activities there was enormous. Skateparks, outdoor gyms and plenty of surf schools were located close to the beach. Everywhere we looked, people were jogging or carrying surfboards down to the shore. Football was being played in the sand, and longboarders weaved their way through the crowds of tourists.

I would have loved to stay there longer than just one day.

On the third day, we docked in Santa Cruz de La Palma. We took a long walk and explored the small town for a few hours.

It was the only day when the weather was not as good. The air was very humid and we were glad to return to the ship earlier than usual.

Our final stop was Funchal on Madeira.

Since I had already been there twice before this trip, I was somewhat familiar with the area.

From the cruise terminal, we walked to the market hall, where we bought some exotic fruits and had breakfast.

Later, we visited the tropical Monte Palace garden.

With a stunning view over the entire city and an active walk through a wide variety of plant species from around the world, we made our way back to the ship.

For anyone who enjoys warm climates, I can highly recommend this trip. Whether as a standalone visit to one of the islands or as a seven day cruise.

I believe both options have their own appeal.

For drawing and collecting a wide variety of motifs, as well as a way of traveling where you do not have to worry about anything else, I can definitely recommend a cruise. Especially if you want to draw along the way.
