10 Creative Workspace Ideas for Small Spaces
Not Everyone Has the Perfect Studio
Not every illustrator is lucky enough to have a dedicated studio. Some work from small apartments, share a desk with roommates, or create while traveling. The goal is not to have the perfect space but to make the most of the one you have. Here are 10 ideas for creating a creative workspace even when space is limited.
1. Cafés
Cafés are probably the most classic and popular place to work creatively. Being surrounded by people and choosing an atmosphere that suits your mood can be incredibly inspiring. They are the perfect place to open your sketchbook and start drawing. They are also great for tackling routine work on your laptop while enjoying a large cup of coffee.
2. Coworking Spaces
Coworking spaces are not just for office workers. They offer flexible desks, private offices, and comfortable lounge areas. One of the biggest advantages is the opportunity to connect with other creative people and professionals who are focused on getting things done. Their energy can be highly motivating, and it is often a great way to grow your network. New ideas often come naturally in this environment.
3. Libraries
Libraries provide a quiet and focused atmosphere where you can work without distractions. They also give you access to books, magazines and valuable resources that can spark new ideas. Being surrounded by people who are equally focused can help you stay productive as well.
4. Working Outdoors
Parks, gardens, and rooftop terraces offer wonderful opportunities to take your work outside. As long as the sunshine is not too distracting, working outdoors is a great way to combine productivity with fresh air. A change of scenery can also bring fresh energy and new perspectives to your creative work.
5. Trains, Trams, and Buses
Working while traveling has its own unique appeal. The constant movement, changing surroundings and different places can be excellent sources of inspiration. Keeping a sketchbook in your backpack is always a good idea.
6. Shared Artist Studios
Many cities offer shared studios or temporary artist spaces. These opportunities often require an application and some advance planning. Once you get a spot, however, they can be incredibly rewarding. Being surrounded by like minded creatives is one of the greatest benefits. It is also common for collaborations and shared projects to grow from these communities. The only downside is that these opportunities are usually temporary.
7. Make Better Use of Your Home
A small table, a shelf for your materials, and good lighting can completely transform even a tiny apartment. If your space starts to feel uninspiring, simply rearranging your furniture can make a surprising difference. Even with limited room, using the same creative space consistently helps build a productive routine.

8. Museums
Museums often have quiet areas that are perfect for working. Many also include cafés, making them ideal if you want a peaceful place while staying surrounded by inspiration.
9. Bars and Pubs
Think of them as the evening version of a café. Sometimes you are so immersed in a project that you want to keep working after the day is over. A quiet bar or pub can offer a refreshing change of atmosphere. You might even meet someone with similar interests, making it easy to continue the conversation over a beer or a glass of wine once you are done working.
10. Working From a Van
If you enjoy exploring and have the opportunity, a converted van or camper can provide an incredible sense of freedom. With everything you need on board, you can work from almost anywhere while constantly finding new sources of inspiration. If you plan to live in a van full time, however, it is important to remember that space is extremely limited. Even a small apartment can feel spacious by comparison.
In 2023, I worked remotely from my van for an extended period while traveling.
You will probably never have the perfect workspace because your creative needs will continue to evolve over time. What matters most is making the best use of the space you have and staying flexible. That is how you keep your motivation alive and remain open to the inspiration waiting around you.
